At the end of 2023, after many years of effort, the long-awaited 2-volume monographic publication by the knowledgable collector and exhibitor Ondrej Földes - Monograph of the Stamps of Slovakia 1939 to 1945, dedicated to postage stamps and related securities of the Slovak Republic, or rather the Slovak State during the war period from 1939 to 1945, is being published.
Monograph of the Stamps of Slovakia 1939 to 1945 is published by the author in an edition of 500 copies. The print is full-color, offset, on smooth paper with a hardcover binding. In the Monograph, the author summarized the current knowledge about stamp production in the period 1939 - 1945 on 748 pages divided into two volumes. The B5-format monograph comprises 40 chapters, the text is enriched with many original, previously unpublished findings and there is also a critical reassessment of some facts and myths.
This philatelic collecting field has already been partially developed and several partial works and stamp catalogs have been published, but a comprehensive monographic work was missing that would comprehensively summarize all known information and add a lot of newly discovered knowledge to this, currently quite popular, collecting field. I think we can conclude that this complex non-trivial task the Monograph of the Stamps of Slovakia 1939 to 1945 brilliantly fulfills.
The content of the Monograph of the Stamps of Slovakia 1939 to 1945 comprises 40 chapters, each dedicated to a specific stamp issue or special type of stamps, including so-called fee control stamps (labels), which do not belong to postal items, but have an integral place here. In each chapter, the author discusses not only the stamps themselves, which he studies in detail and precisely illustrates in text and images, but also the circumstances of their creation, the preparation of artistic designs and the gradual steps leading to the actual printing and finalization of the edition.
The text part of the Monograph of the Stamps of Slovakia 1939 to 1945 is prepared on the basis of the most recent knowledge, obtained through a long-term study of specialised literature, historical official postal sources and archival funds, as well as interviews with memorialists who were present or provided credible first-hand testimony. The text is enriched with many original, yet unpublished findings and there is also a critical reassessment of some facts and myths. All important information is accompanied by 3,900 high-quality and thoroughly processed color illustrations of designs, plate flaws, perfins and postal usages of Slovak postage stamps using, as is the author's good habit, beautiful postal used entires.
Study of the Otvorenie slovenského snemu 18. 1. 1939 (Opening of the Slovak Parliament on January 18, 1939) overprint.
A preview of the very first designs for stamps with a portrait of Andrej Hlinka.
Studies of stamp designs for the Embroiderer, Woman at the Spring and Woodcutter by Martin Benka for the issue of Definitive postage stamps 2, 4 and 5 Ks (Folk Motifs).
Examples of postal use of stamps from the Charity souvenir sheet hárček in favor of youth care and airmail stamps.
Summary:
Monograph of the Stamps of Slovakia 1939 to 1945 on every page - both in terms of content, information and clarity, and graphics - met the high expectations of collectors! GREAT ADMIRATION and THANKS to the author for his patience and tenacity! It was definitely worth the wait.
I recommend everyone to study this unique philatelic monograph in detail and to examine their collection in the light of its new findings and discoveries. I am sure that you will discover many previously unsuspected and even interesting philatelic discoveries in terms of price.
