Thematic description and context:

Po druhý raz v histórii sa zimné olympijské hry konali v Ázii. Ich dejiskom bolo od 7. do 22. februára 1998 japonské mesto Nagano. Po úspešnej premiére v Sappore 1972 očakávali v krajine vychádzajúceho slnka na XVIII. ZOH 3000 športovcov zo 60 krajín, ktorí súťažili v 7 športových odvetviach. Rozdelilo sa 68 medailových kompletov. Na ľade v Sappore získal pred viac ako štvrťstoročím Ondrej Nepela pre slovenský šport prvé zlato na ZOH. Nagano bolo v dňoch 5. - 14. marca 1998 aj dejiskom zimných paraoplympijských hier. 1500 reprezentantov z 30 krajín, medzi nimi i Slovenska, súťažilo v 5 športoch.
